Press Release – Tool Helps Professionals Quantify Cost, Energy Savings and ROI

Broomfield, CO—July 14, 2009 — While “greening” the data center is good for the environment and good for the bottom line, few resources provide the business case to begin an efficiency program. In response, 42U, a leader in data center efficiency solutions and services, has premiered a free, interactive Data Center Energy Savings Calculator to help data center managers quantify the energy, cost, and CO2 savings possible through efficiency efforts.

The tool uses the Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) metric as the basis for its calculation. After users insert their current PUE, goal PUE, electricity cost, and IT load, the calculator projects savings over a one, five, and ten year period—figures which help data center professionals determine the return on investment of their efficiency improvements.

“In today’s economy, data center professionals need accurate data to justify projects to upper management,” said Steve Lewis, 42U’s Director of Sales. “Our calculator provides the starting point for those conversations and shows that efficiency improvements have a substantial payback.”

Savings can be realized across all data center sizes and locations. In improving PUE from 2.0 to 1.5, a small 200kW facility in Ohio stands to save over $35,000 a year in energy costs and 264 tons of CO2 emissions. These achievements deliver an excellent bottom line message to management teams and also spread a message of environmental responsibility to the marketplace.

Energy Savings Calculator“We’re extremely pleased to impact our clients on both levels. Our program is designed to help IT and Facilities champion these efforts in their facility,” said Lewis.

42U provides clients with a phased approach to data center efficiency, starting with low-cost/ no cost best practices that lead to an immediate reduction in energy expense. These savings, reinvested in efficient technologies, allow data centers to continually evolve into highly efficient, highly available facilities.

Press Release – Colorado and Minnesota Customers Can Realize Significant Cost Savings

Broomfield, CO—May 29, 2009 — 42U Data Center Solutions, a leader in data center design and efficiency solutions and services, today announced it has been selected as an approved study provider in Xcel Energy’s (NYSE: XEL) Data Center Efficiency Program. 42U will serve as a technical resource and advisor to Xcel Energy customers, as they seek to curb energy consumption, cut costs, and limit the environmental impact of their data center operations.

“Whether managers are interested in demonstrating green business practices or simply want to save money on energy bills, efficiency is the best place to start,” said Xcel Energy program manager Ann Garbow. “Our studies can help identify energy saving opportunities in data center equipment, design and operational choices.”

Targeted at clients in Colorado and Minnesota, the Data Center Efficiency Program offers rebates for preapproved efficiency studies/projects and discounts for each kilowatt saved through efficiency improvements. As a participating provider, 42U will perform efficiency assessments that analyze energy use, recommend client-specific efficiency improvements, and quantify potential energy savings.

Throughout each engagement, 42U will work in concert with Xcel Energy clients to provide sound efficiency consulting, professional project management, and a winning business case to implement efficiency recommendations.

“Xcel Energy has put together a comprehensive efficiency initiative, and we’re thrilled to be a part of their Data Center Efficiency program,” said Alan Mamane, Founder and CEO of 42U. “The CapEx and OpEx costs of inefficiency can encumber any organization. We look forward to helping data centers improve efficiencies and bolster their bottom line.”

42U delivers a range of assessments designed to offer value to the full range of data center sizes. They are of two fundamental types: point-in-time and real-time. Managers of smaller, less volatile data centers benefit from the economical pricing and quick turn-around of the 42U Best Practice Assessment. Managers of larger data centers benefit from the real-time monitoring and instantaneous feedback on changes made on the data center floor from the 42U Data Center Condition and Capacity Assessment.

42U Presents at AFCOM’s Data Center World 2009 Conference

Press Release – 42U Presents at AFCOM’S Data Center World 2009, the World’s Largest Data Center industry Conference

Broomfield, CO—March 26, 2009 — Even in uncertain financial times, 42U, the nation’s largest, vendor-independent data center solutions and service firm, knows where data centers can access fresh capital: their utility bill.

At Data Center World 2009 in Las Vegas, 42U shared with attendees a blueprint to use less energy, shrink their energy bills, and transform their data centers into highly available, highly efficient computing facilities.

“We are excited to present clients with a structured approach to bring efficiency best practices to their data center,” said Steve Lewis, 42U’s Director of Sales. “Our program is designed to help IT and Facilities champion a cost saving effort in their facility.”

42U’s presentation—“Re-engineering to a “Green” Data Center with Measurable ROI”—directed attendees toward low cost, simple adjustments that yield an immediate reduction in energy consumption and expense. These savings, reinvested in efficient technologies and perhaps supplemented by utility rebates, allow data center professionals to demonstrate an ROI and a reduced carbon footprint to their management teams.

At the heart of the savings is consistency. Data centers must know where they currently are on the efficiency curve and continually monitor the results of their ongoing efficiency efforts.

“That’s why we emphasize the initial PUE measurement. Our clients not only benchmark their energy efficiency, they define a repeatable process,” added Lewis. “With each iteration, they can demonstrate continual improvements and validate the efficiency program through their energy and cost savings.”

The result: a data center that’s good for the environment and even better for the enterprise.

Press Release – 42U Adds Rittal’s Liquid Cooling and PDU Products to GSA

Broomfield, CO – April 25, 2008: 42U, the nation’s largest, vendor-independent valued-added reseller of data center infrastructure solutions today announced that is has added Rittal to their GSA schedule.

With this addition, 42U’s government customers can now have access to the industry’s leading modular, scalable and comprehensive IT infrastructure solutions including enclosures, high-density cooling solutions and power distribution units. Included in the agreement are the following three points:

1. Rittal Liquid Cooling Package (LCP)
Developed to remove high levels of wasted heat from server enclosures, this high density cooling solution utilizes air/water heat exchangers to provide uniform, effective and affordable cooling for servers and similar IT equipment. The special horizontal airflow of the Rittal LCP represents an adaptation of this widespread cooling principle, providing cooled air uniformly throughout the complete height of the enclosure.

  • LCP Standard
Designed to be installed next to an 80″ (2000 mm) high by 40″/48″ (1000/1200 mm) deep TS8 server cabinet, the LCP Standard can accommodate up to three air/water exchanger modules that can be hot swapped if needed. When fully loaded with three air/water exchanger modules the LCP Standard can provide up to 68,243 BTU (20KW) of useful cooling with a maximum air volume of 1766 cfm (3000 m3/hr). Don’t have an immediate need for that much heat removal? Start with one exchanger module then add more as needed.

  • LCP Plus
Using the same footprint and basic design as the Standard, the LCP Plus includes six fan modules that work in concert with the included heat exchanger to increase the useful cooling capacity to 95,540 BTU (28 kW). The LCP Plus is designed for cabinets 80″ (2000 mm) high by 48″ (1200 mm) deep and has a maximum air volume of 2825 cfm (4800 m3/hr). The LCP Plus (and LCP Standard) can be bayed to a single cabinet or between two enclosures. It is also possible to put a pair of LCPs on either side of especially hot cabinets for applications where extreme heat loads are present.

  • LCP Extend
Ideal for retrofitting, the LCP Extend is installed on the rear door of problem racks. The LCP Extend can be ordered for use on cabinets from other manufacturers. If you are already using Rittal cabinets, the unit comes mounted into the proper replacement rear door which allows you to simply swap it out with the existing rear door.

2. Rittal Power Distribution Units (PDU)

  • Metered PDU
Metered PDU products provide reliable power distribution for all the devices in your equipment cabinet, from 5,000 to 20,000 Watts. Metered units are available in 20 or 30 amps, 120 Volts or 208/240 Volts single-phase, and 208 Volts three-phase. Local input current monitoring allows the installation engineer to verify the combined load on the circuit or phase.

  • Smart PDU
The Smart PDU products provide reliable power distribution combined with remote power and environmental monitoring. Use the network interface to view power, temperature and humidity levels via a Web browser, or receive SNMP-based alarms when conditions exceed defined thresholds.

  • Switched PDU
Switched PDU products are Flagship PDU’s with remote monitoring and management, including reboot commands for connected servers and network equipment. The Switched PDU products provide complete lights-out management of a data center and remote branch office. Switched PDU’s combine remote configuration and management with power distribution and power and environmental monitoring.

3. Rittal TS8 Modular Industrial Enclosure
A revolutionary system designed specifically for demanding industrial applications. Featuring a 16- fold tubular frame and multi-level mounting, the TS8 boasts unsurpassed strength and flexibility. The robust tubular frame can hold weight loads up to 1,500 lbs on the mounting panel. The 25 mm hole pattern allows components and accessories to be mounted in three directions — by height, width and depth – which provides maximum space utilization (up to 30% more available space than traditional NEMA style enclosures of equal dimension). The symmetrical frame design makes suiting in a row, into a corner or even back-to-back simple

42U’s GSA contract number is GS-35F-0180U and can be found under Schedule Information Numbers (SINs) 132-8 (Purchase of Equipment). For more information please visit www.42u.com.
